TRIPOLI, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) on Wednesday expressed concern about recent unilateral actions taken by some political parties in the country.
'UNSMIL is following up with concern on the recent unilateral acts by Libyan political actors and institutions in the East, West, and South,' UNSMIL said in a statement.
'In the current climate, these unilateral acts serve to increase tension, undermine trust, and further entrench institutional divisions and discord among Libyans,' the statement said.
The statement stressed the urgent need for consensus, dialogue, and unity and reminded all political leaders and institutions of their commitments and obligations under the Libyan Political Agreement and its amendments, in line with all relevant UN Security Council resolutions, particularly resolution 2702 (2023).
The Mission called on all Libyan parties to embrace dialogue and compromise 'in a way that serves the interests of all Libyans.'
The Eastern-based House of Representatives (parliament) on Monday rejected the decision of the Tripoli-based Presidential Council to create a new agency for national referendums and inquiries and demanded it be canceled.
Libya remains politically divided more than a decade after the 2011 overthrow of longtime leader Muammar Gaddafi, with a UN-recognized government in Tripoli and a rival administration in the eastern city of Tobruk. ■
